What's New
IOWD Expands Programs
With the encouragement of the Rwandan Ministry of Health, IOWD has expanded our programs to include specialists in the following fields: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecological Laparoscopy, Urology, Colon/Rectal, Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, Anesthesiology, ICU/Pulmonary Pathology, Neo-Natalogy, Pediatrics, Pediatric Urology and Nurse Anesthetists. The doctors present lectures, perform surgeries, go on "rounds", participate in daily staff meetings, mentor doctors in training, and offer suggestions for improvements in protocols, and create templates, codes and specific protocols for use in the pathology laboratory. After each mission, medical reports are compiled by each team of specialists and presented to the Ministry of Health.
Touching the lives of so many patients has been remarkable...from a 2 year old boy, to teenagers, to adults, IOWD doctors and nurses have made a significant medical contribution in Rwanda. Our IOWD team members have pledged to return again and again to continue their work at Kibagabaga, King Faisal and CHUK. Considering the wonderful thank you letters that IOWD has received from Rwandan doctors, we know we will always be welcome!
Dr. Jim Greenberg, Obstetrician/Gynecologist concentrated on teaching skills in regard to C-sections at Kibagabaga Hospital. Dr. Jim brought 10 C-section kits...each filled with 20 new instruments, all of which were donated to the Maternity Department. The instruments were graciously donated by Codman, a division of Johnson and Johnson. This new concept of having a specific number of important instruments in a C-section tray, was approved by the Ministry of Health. It will allow the doctors to move quickly and efficiently through this specific surgery.
Dr. Michael Yaker, Pediatrician, also spent most of his time with the Pediatric staff at Kibagabaga Hospital. Michael had brought 2 "special" dolls with him in order to teach pediatric resuscitation. The staff at Kibagabaga was fascinated by the doll and what could be done with it (a heart beat could be created, it could cry, etc.). Dr. Michael also visited Kimironko Health Center. The nurses and midwives were taught about resuscitation in a very clear and exact way. Each participant in the class was allowed to apply techniques to the doll. It was a wonderful experience for Dr. Michael and for his students!
